LEGO The Hobbit

LEGO The Hobbit

The LEGO The Hobbit theme was a discontinued product line launched in December 2012 as a direct tie-in with Peter Jackson's film trilogy (An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies). The sets ran until the end of 2014, complementing the earlier LEGO The Lord of the Rings theme.

Theme Overview

The sets followed the story of Bilbo Baggins and the company of thirteen dwarves on their journey to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. The theme included detailed locations, vehicles, and a wide array of unique minifigures for each of the dwarves, as well as Bilbo, Gandalf, Gollum, and various Elves and Orcs.

Construction Sets

A total of nine main sets were released across two waves in 2012 and 2014, capturing key moments from the first and third films (sets for the second film were canceled).

An Unexpected Gathering (79003): The iconic set featuring the interior and exterior of Bag End, Bilbo Baggins' home in the Shire. It was a popular and highly detailed set, including minifigures for Bilbo and six of the dwarves.

Goblin King Battle (79010): A large set depicting the subterranean goblin caves, complete with the Goblin King figure.

Escape from Mirkwood Spiders (79001): A smaller set with three spider builds and several minifigures.

Barrel Escape (79004): Recreated the action sequence where the dwarves escape the Elf kingdom in barrels floating down a river.

Attack on Lake-town (79016): A detailed set based on the human settlement in the final film's timeline.

Battle of Dol Guldur (79014) and Dol Guldur Ambush (79011): Sets featuring the ruined fortress where Gandalf fought Sauron and the Necromancer.

Video Games and Media

The theme was supported by a video game and featured in other media:

LEGO The Hobbit: A video game that covered the plots of the first two Hobbit films (An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug), released in 2014.

LEGO Dimensions: The "toys-to-life" game included a Lord of the Rings level pack and fun packs with playable characters from both themes, including the Hobbit character Gollum.

Collectibility

As a retired theme, these sets are no longer available in standard retail stores. They are now sought after by collectors, with popular sets like An Unexpected Gathering fetching higher prices on online marketplaces.
